Winter is upon us, which can only mean one thing for the ever-moving world of fashion: Spring shoes are just around the corner and a heap of new trends is going to come with it. It’s intimidating, but have no fear! While you’ve been zipping up your knee high boots, we’ve been hot on the trail of the best shoe styles of the upcoming season. Even though it was difficult to narrow it down, here are the trends we’re most looking forward to for Spring 2014:

Mules: Not to be confused with the animal, mules are shoes characterized by their exposed heel and this Spring 2014 season they are everywhere. Backless shoes are a trend everyone can rock, as they come in a myriad of heights. We spotted them on the catwalks of mega-brands Alexander Wang, Chloé, Stella McCartney, and Céline. Our faves? Of course, Gianvito Rossi is the master of the mule – he even designed Altuzarra’s gorgeous runway mules – but, we also can’t help but love Monique Lhuillier’s gorgeous use of PVC in her heel-baring designs and Christian Louboutin’s bead-embellished creations.

Placid Blue: This icy-toned blue is one of Pantone’s top picks for the Spring 2014 season. Dubbed “placid blue,” this hue does indeed have a calming and serene quality about it and designers latched onto it for their warmer weather designs. Used as both the main color and as an accenting neutral, we love the way this normally subversive color is taking control this season. From the curved heel of Walter Steiger’s glorious pump to Miu Miu’s chunky heeled platform, this color has proven itself to be much more than an Easter egg favorite.

Freesia: As if to tell placid blue to move over and share the stage, this Pantone pick is a blazing yellow that commands attention. Freesia is the color of electric citrus, and where placid blue is a blue sky, freesia is the smoldering sun. Just a glimpse at the color instantly energizes you, which is why it isn’t surprising that designers such as Giuseppe Zanotti, Nicholas Kirkwood, Prada, ShoeRazzi favorite Jerome C. Rousseau, and John Galliano (spotted on the trendy heels of Rita Ora) have all utilized this vibrant color. After all, there is no better way to add a kick of ferocity to an outfit than with a sick pair of shoes!

Sporty: This spring, the femininity of high heels are combining with an unexpected element: sportiness. We briefly delved into this trend in our recap of the hottest shoes on the Milanese runways, but this trend is proving to be much more than a footnote. Whether it’s through the use of athletic materials such as perforated leather (Daniele Michetti), woven nylon (Balenciaga), and neoprene (John Galliano), or through design like Emilio Pucci’s padded leather straps, Prada’s rubber bumpers and sole, or Christian Dior’s sneaker laces, it’s clear that one of the hottest trends of Spring 2014 is combining urban style with luxury.

Funky Embellishments: For the past couple seasons, wild embellishments have been a designer standby to make their shoes really stand out, and this season is no different. We’re seeing a wealth of extravagant and unique embellishments that are making classic shoe designs total statement makers. From Sophia Webster’s spunky and vibrant butterfly wings to Bionda Castana’s ingenious use of lace and silicone to create a leopard print, using embellishments is the go-to way to make your shoes the most enviable soles on the block. Christian Louboutin even got in on the trend with his darling doorknocker embellishments and that’s how you know it’s a must-follow trend.

Floral Appliqué: Along the same vein of embellishments, another incredibly popular trend during this upcoming spring and summer season is the use of floral appliqués. It makes sense when you think about it: what better way to celebrate warm weather’s flowers and gorgeous variety of colors than using those very vessels of vibrancy as shoe-spiration? The flowers range from subtle (Christian Dior, Brian Atwood) to a veritable bouquet (we’re looking at you Aperlai and Kotur!), but no matter the size of the flower, we love the elegance and femininity it effortlessly conveys.

Beaded: By this time, you’re probably sensing a theme: next season is all about personality-filled shoes. The more accoutrements the better. Following the shoe jewelry trend (shoewlry? We’ll work on a name for this, we promise), some of the hottest shoes you’ll be seeing in Spring 2014 are ornately beaded works of footwear art. Emilio Pucci’s Masai-inspired beading is picture perfect, Paul Andrew’s floral inspiration combines two trends in one pump, and Aperlai’s caviar beaded platform shoes – seen on Willow Shields during The Hunger Games: Catching Fire press tour – is edgy while still being darling. However, the shoe that takes the bead-embellished cake is definitely Jerome C. Rousseau’s multi-beaded, multi-dimensional heel, which is sure to turn heads.

Walter-Steiger-LogoWalter Steiger’s Spring 2013 collection is fairytale-inspired and full of unicorns, pixies & amphibians. Steiger plays with his signature bow-shaped heel and we see it covered in studs, designed with a metal finish and covered in crinkle fabric.

Ashley Tisdale recently wore the new Temptress sandals to a red carpet premiere and Kim Kardashian was spotted wearing the “Theo” at Paris Fashion Week.

Steiger also collaborated with Victoria, Victoria Beckham again for her Fall 2013 show just presented at New York Fashion Week.

My top 4 favorite styles are the TerminusTinkerbellTadpole and Tempo sandals.

There are many more styles available online this season and I’ve listed the retailers below.

Check out Walter Steiger’s recently re-designed web site and follow them on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.

I started collecting these images weeks ago and wanted to share some major shoe eye candy just in time for the new year. Most of these styles aren’t available yet, however, there are a few available for pre-order.

Noticeable Spring/Summer 2013 shoe trends:

Iridescence

This reflective technique was the first trend I noticed. Designers have used it on both snakeskin and patent leather. It’s also seen in Dior and Pierre Hardy’s collections (not pictured).

Stella McCartney seems to be one step ahead & if you can’t wait until spring, she designed a faux-leather iridescent pump available at Bergdorf Goodman.

Mixed Media Madness
There are several obvious examples of this mixed media trend and I chose designs featuring 3 or more different materials. The styles below are colorful and show the designers’ playful side.

For me, the combination of different textures & colors is a hit-or-miss. Christian Louboutin uses mixed media wildly throughout his collection.

Embroidery

I love embroidered details, they give a fun, special touch. Barbara Bui and Balmain have several styles completely embroidered whereas Rupert Sanderson & Isa Tapia feature parts of the shoe embroidered with tropical birds.

Colorful Lace

Nectarine

Looking through Style.com’s Accessories Index I’ve spotted several orangey tones. Then I saw nectarine listed on the Pantone Spring 2013 Fashion Color Report which has also migrated to footwear. Nectarine has a warm coral touch and is also a skin flattering tone.

I’m in love! Meet the newest family member, Muse by Walter Steiger. These pumps are from the Fall 2012 collection featuring black suede, a 5.5″ heel, platform, tapered toe and my favorite part – the signature claw heel. I was a little worried they would be too big when I opened the box but it was just an illusion from the bow-shaped heel….I took my standard size 37 and they fit perfect.

I love how dangerous they look compared to how comfortable they feel. They’re easy to get on and the gold leather lining/suede is very soft. Even with the tapered toe they don’t pinch. Elizabeth Banks wore the patent leather version during “The Hunger Games’ promotional tour and Tyra Banks was just spotted in them yesterday.

You can find the Muse pumps online at Barneys; available in blackbluegrey suede and in black patent leather.

Walter-Steiger-Muse-Pump

I had to try these on with black stockings (mostly because Victoria Beckham wore her Oscar boots with them). I love how the claw looks like an extension of the leg. It’s still very much summer here however I put a fun fallish look together. I’m going to have so much fun with these all season!

I’m still not sure if I’ll be heading up for NYFW…however I will be watching the shows thanks to CatwalkLiveTV:

Catwalk-live
One of the first people I started following on Twitter years ago was Roz. She’s an avid shoe lover and all around amazing. Roz created CatwalkLive.TV a couple seasons ago which helps you keep track of live streaming runway shows during fashion month (NY/London/Milan/Paris). They also feature all known links for each show and now there’s also a mobile version and live streaming alerts.

Steiger-Spring-2012
Walter Stegier’s Spring 2012 collection is the perfect paradox. We see delicate, minimalistic sandals like the Punchy and Philo and also several bold designs like the Prunelle and Prestance featuring the signature curved Steiger heel. Materials include raphia, patent leather, python and crocodile with a mix of bright neon tones. Most recently we’ve seen Elizabeth Banks in the Muse, Malin Akerman in the Punchy and Fergie wore the Prestance to the Grammys.

Muse is one of of Steiger’s signature designs and available online at Barneys. We’ve also seen Nicki Minaj wear the Muse in pink. Elizabeth has worn an impressive variety of designers, looks and shoes throughout the THG tour. Check out more celebrities spotted in Walter Steiger shoes.

Fergie-Walter-Steiger-heels

Fergie wore Walter Steiger Prestance double platform sandals to the 54th Annual Grammy Awards. These heels are from the Spring 2012 collection and available online in green at Barneys NYC. What your thoughts on Fergie’s Jean Paul Gaultier Couture dress? Since Fergie’s dress is so long there isn’t a great photo of her heels however she showed them off on the MTV red carpet live stream. Check out more shoes seen at the 2012 Grammys.

Heidi Klum attended Elton John’s Oscars Viewing Party and I was really disappointed in her shoe choice. I love her dress, I love her shoes; but not together. Her chunky embellished Louboutin platform pumps detracts from the lovely fading tier effect on the bottom of her dress. With so much “jazz” featured on the top, the shoes should have been dark to blend in. I rarely ever say this, but Heidi should have chosen a simple black heel.

What Heidi Wore:
Christian Louboutin Daffodile Strauss platform pump

Heidi might have been thinking, “the more sparkles the better” but these heels don’t work. They’re are from Louboutin’s Spring 2011 collection. Beyonce was also recently spotted wearing the Daffodile Strauss pumps and rocking them!

Heidi Klum in Christian Louboutin

Shoes She Should Have Worn:

Shoes She Should Have Worn Heidi Klum

Brian Atwood Maniac black satin; available online at MyTheresa in black patent
This pump has been very popular among many celebrities recently, but I still think this would have been one of the best shoes for Heidi’s outfit.

Christian Louboutin Pigalle Plato; available online at the official US Christian Louboutin boutique
The Pigalle Plato is the new hottest pump for the season. It’s from Louboutin’s Spring 2011 collection and would have been a trendy choice.

Walter Steiger Noga patent open toe pump; available online at Luisaviaroma
The black & silver colors in the Noga pump would have been the most surprising choice. Steiger’s heels are so hot right now and I’m obsessed with the arched bow heel.

Christian Louboutin Very Privé suede peep toe pump; available online at Shop Savannahs
The Very Privé suede pump is the basic shoe needed for Heidi’s gown. The suede texture; rather than a patent, would have been the perfect match.

Which Shoe do you think Heidi should have worn?

Walter Steiger Online

For the first time ever you can now purchase Walter Steiger’s heels online. Luisaviaroma is carrying three fabulous designs from Walter Steiger’s Spring 2011 collection. I love Steiger’s signature bow shaped heel! Kim Kardashian was spotted wearing Walter Steiger leopard print heels in a feature with Elle in September.
