Designer Shoes: Sophia Webster

Sophia-Webster-Spring-2014-shoesIf Sophia Webster’s last collection was all about doing your best Cher Horowitz impression while strutting down the tiles at your local mall, this season is all about getting lost in the imaginative and colorful realm of nature. Literally! For her presentation, Sophia let herself walk on the wild side, creating a scene that was straight out of Alice in Wonderland or the most far out Dr. Seuss tale called “Insect Slumber Party.” It was a whimsical presentation, complete with flower-twined daybeds and Cindy Lou-Who hair; the models (thankfully) didn’t resemble bugs in the slightest, though the apparel definitely evoked patterns found in the outdoors, specifically channeling the beauty of the butterfly.

The butterfly was transformed most frequently and in a myriad of ways. Delicate laser cut butterfly wings construct intense gladiator knee-high boots or land on the back of stellar pumps, while the ornate patterns of the wings are found in patent and matte leather renditions. It’s unsurprising that these are some of the most inspired pieces of the collection, as she constructed an entire shoe line while studying at RCA.

Not to rely on nature alone (Sophia Webster isn’t Sophia Webster without prints, prints, and more prints), this collection is also rife with kooky combinations of natural and manufactured prints – a butterfly’s wings juxtaposed against vibrant polka dots, PVC with iridescent leather, stripes with flower petals, and would-be-basic pumps tread into statement making territory with the use of alphabet beads stacked to become a totally killer heel. Heels weren’t the only soles with an attitude, because there, along the foliage and heart prints, were speech bubble slogans emblazoned on the tops of sandals, proclaiming such things as “Here Comes the Hotstepper” and “Walk the Walk”. Those very watchwords are also found on other accessories like handbags and backpacks.

Our favorite? Though we can’t resist the charm of a sassy slogan or the allure of intricate laser cuts, we’re completely in love with her cloud pattern, amped up with a 3D embroidered trim. It’s the perfect blend of charm and quirk that makes a pair of shoes constantly rotate into your weekly rotation.

Although her eponymous line is somewhat new, Sophia Webster’s 2013 hinted at her coming success. With a wildly successful J.Crew collaboration under her belt, winning the prestigious “Emerging Accessories Designer” award at the British Fashion Awards, and this stunning start to the 2014 year, it’s clear that her career will flourish like this collection.

Sophia Webster Phoebe sandals | 100mm/4″ heel | shop at Forward by Elyse Walker and Sophia Webster

There’s a reason my Sophia Webster collection keeps growing – her designs are always the perfect mix of whimsy and wearability that I can wear (and walk in) over & over again. This metallic sandal is my favorite style from her new playfully exotic Resort 2014 collection.

Phoebe features mirrored rose gold geometric cutout leather, apricot patent leather covered heel, fluo orange & green embroidery and long leather laces which tie around the back of the ankle embellished with short leather tassels. Half sizes are available.

Winter is upon us, which can only mean one thing for the ever-moving world of fashion: Spring shoes are just around the corner and a heap of new trends is going to come with it. It’s intimidating, but have no fear! While you’ve been zipping up your knee high boots, we’ve been hot on the trail of the best shoe styles of the upcoming season. Even though it was difficult to narrow it down, here are the trends we’re most looking forward to for Spring 2014:

Mules: Not to be confused with the animal, mules are shoes characterized by their exposed heel and this Spring 2014 season they are everywhere. Backless shoes are a trend everyone can rock, as they come in a myriad of heights. We spotted them on the catwalks of mega-brands Alexander Wang, Chloé, Stella McCartney, and Céline. Our faves? Of course, Gianvito Rossi is the master of the mule – he even designed Altuzarra’s gorgeous runway mules – but, we also can’t help but love Monique Lhuillier’s gorgeous use of PVC in her heel-baring designs and Christian Louboutin’s bead-embellished creations.

Placid Blue: This icy-toned blue is one of Pantone’s top picks for the Spring 2014 season. Dubbed “placid blue,” this hue does indeed have a calming and serene quality about it and designers latched onto it for their warmer weather designs. Used as both the main color and as an accenting neutral, we love the way this normally subversive color is taking control this season. From the curved heel of Walter Steiger’s glorious pump to Miu Miu’s chunky heeled platform, this color has proven itself to be much more than an Easter egg favorite.

Freesia: As if to tell placid blue to move over and share the stage, this Pantone pick is a blazing yellow that commands attention. Freesia is the color of electric citrus, and where placid blue is a blue sky, freesia is the smoldering sun. Just a glimpse at the color instantly energizes you, which is why it isn’t surprising that designers such as Giuseppe Zanotti, Nicholas Kirkwood, Prada, ShoeRazzi favorite Jerome C. Rousseau, and John Galliano (spotted on the trendy heels of Rita Ora) have all utilized this vibrant color. After all, there is no better way to add a kick of ferocity to an outfit than with a sick pair of shoes!

Sporty: This spring, the femininity of high heels are combining with an unexpected element: sportiness. We briefly delved into this trend in our recap of the hottest shoes on the Milanese runways, but this trend is proving to be much more than a footnote. Whether it’s through the use of athletic materials such as perforated leather (Daniele Michetti), woven nylon (Balenciaga), and neoprene (John Galliano), or through design like Emilio Pucci’s padded leather straps, Prada’s rubber bumpers and sole, or Christian Dior’s sneaker laces, it’s clear that one of the hottest trends of Spring 2014 is combining urban style with luxury.

Funky Embellishments: For the past couple seasons, wild embellishments have been a designer standby to make their shoes really stand out, and this season is no different. We’re seeing a wealth of extravagant and unique embellishments that are making classic shoe designs total statement makers. From Sophia Webster’s spunky and vibrant butterfly wings to Bionda Castana’s ingenious use of lace and silicone to create a leopard print, using embellishments is the go-to way to make your shoes the most enviable soles on the block. Christian Louboutin even got in on the trend with his darling doorknocker embellishments and that’s how you know it’s a must-follow trend.

Floral Appliqué: Along the same vein of embellishments, another incredibly popular trend during this upcoming spring and summer season is the use of floral appliqués. It makes sense when you think about it: what better way to celebrate warm weather’s flowers and gorgeous variety of colors than using those very vessels of vibrancy as shoe-spiration? The flowers range from subtle (Christian Dior, Brian Atwood) to a veritable bouquet (we’re looking at you Aperlai and Kotur!), but no matter the size of the flower, we love the elegance and femininity it effortlessly conveys.

Beaded: By this time, you’re probably sensing a theme: next season is all about personality-filled shoes. The more accoutrements the better. Following the shoe jewelry trend (shoewlry? We’ll work on a name for this, we promise), some of the hottest shoes you’ll be seeing in Spring 2014 are ornately beaded works of footwear art. Emilio Pucci’s Masai-inspired beading is picture perfect, Paul Andrew’s floral inspiration combines two trends in one pump, and Aperlai’s caviar beaded platform shoes – seen on Willow Shields during The Hunger Games: Catching Fire press tour – is edgy while still being darling. However, the shoe that takes the bead-embellished cake is definitely Jerome C. Rousseau’s multi-beaded, multi-dimensional heel, which is sure to turn heads.

I wanted to get this post out last week but TIFF kicked my butt. I have such a soft spot for a good strappy shoe and NYFW did not disappoint. Manolo Blahnik had the most collaborations again this season, 20 total.

Highlights:
Brian Atwood designed his popular Evie open-toe pump in several yummy confectionary colors for Dennis Basso.
Gio Diev debuted his first collaboration with Sally LaPointe. The pumps were strong & sexy with a high-rise front, slightly padded straps & pinhole closures.
– I hope you like mules…they’re sky-high & sexy as ever. The standout designs were seen down the runway at both Altuzarra and Victoria Beckham.
Sophia Webster burst onto the scene with her debut collection last year. She has officially hit a whole new level and has already collaborated with J.Crew!

My favorites:
Cesare Casadei for Prabal Gurung is a brilliant match. This season we saw sexy slingback pumps with several thin straps wrapped around the heel.
Christian Louboutin for Marchesa‘s fairytale-inspired collection was extra dreamy & romantic with lace-up laser cut suede pumps.
Marissa Webb was my all-around favorite. Her slightly sporty pumps are wearable (4-4.5″ heel) and have the corset lace-up front which I’m crazy about.
– The super strappy pumps at Narcriso Rodriguez were another stand out, and this black & white snakeskin design is TDF.

I know it’s not even Halloween yet, however, Resort & Cruise 2013 styles are already rolling in! I still plan on posting many more fall styles however I wanted to feature new designs that have caught my eye.

Notes:
One of the most talked about new shoe designers, Sophia Webster, has two new styles available online at Colette. More styles (these are actually Spring 2013) are also arriving at Net-A-Porter very soon.

I seem to always love Alexander Wang’s resort shoes more than any other season…I love the red-hot croc-embossed leather.

Brian Atwood’s new TriBeCa sandal is also available in blue at Nordstrom.

In case you haven’t heard, Jimmy Choo’s cruise collection is now available for pre-order on their website and a few shoes are also at Nordstrom
