How to Measure Feet for Correct Shoe Sizes

In order to get the correct size shoe for your feet, there are a few steps you should follow. The most accurate shoe measure device is a Brannock device to measure shoe size.

This tool can measure not only foot length, but also foot width. If you don’t have this measuring device though, you can take these steps:

The first thing you have to do is to take a piece of paper and draw lines from heel to toe and from big toe to little one. Then cut out the sheet of paper and place it on a hard surface. You will need a measuring tape or ruler that can measure in centimeters.

Place the foot with the paper sheet under your foot and make sure that both heels are squarely placed against the corresponding line.

Make sure your feet don’t move during this process. If they do, go back to step 1!

Now it’s time for measuring: hold either end of your firmly, but make sure it doesn’t pull. If it’s too long, you go by the shortest distance between two lines or cut it down to size.

If your feet are wide, have someone measure them while you are standing up. That is because your toes spread out when they touch the ground while you are standing up straight.

If you wanted to get a shoe for yourself while seated on a chair, that would be impractical. It’s easier if someone measures them while they are firmly on the ground and your foot doesn’t move at all!

The circumference of your feet should always be measured in centimeters! So make sure you check if both measurements for either side match before deciding whether to buy or not!

There is also another method of measuring your own feet, and it is done exactly the same way as described above. The difference lies in how you hold the measuring tape or ruler.

If you decide to use this method of measurement, you will not get an accurate reading if your foot moves during measurements. Always read the instructions on the box of whatever brand of shoes you buy!

If there is no written instruction on this subject, look up some videos on YouTube; many brands also provide that kind of information on their websites.

This method of getting your perfect shoe size consists in measuring both your feet and then adding one centimeter (0.4 inches) to each measurement and then dividing by two: that is exactly the size of shoes you should get for each foot!

This rule holds mostly for men’s shoes, but many women also use this method. This method is not as accurate.

The advantage of this method though is that you can do it at home, by yourself. It’s faster, easier and doesn’t require any help from anyone else.

The only drawback is that your feet might grow in size slightly during the day because of swelling or something like that. If you measure them in the morning, you will get a very accurate reading!

Don’t make the mistake of buying too small shoes thinking you’ll “slowly” break into them! There are no magic solutions to “break into” uncomfortable shoes – just don’t buy them if they aren’t comfortable right away! Look for quality outdoor shoes with a good fit instead.

If you are confused about shoe width letters and want to know what they mean, check out the shoe width letters chart.

Do Shoe Sizes Go by Inches

No, the shoe sizes are not measured only by inches, actually, you get more accurate measurements with centimeters. We have added both centimeters and inches for above chart.

Do Shoes Size Vary by Brand

Sometimes shoe sizes can seem to vary by a half size depending on the brand. It is best to try on shoes before buying them so you know what size they are.

But if not, you can find out the conversion between brands online and it is worth looking into the retailer’s own conversion chart as well.

How Do Men’s Shoe Size Compare to Women’s

Men’s shoe sizes are approximately two sizes bigger

Does Shoe Size Determine Height?

The size of shoes is not a definite sign of how tall someone will be. There can be tall people with smaller feet and shorter people with big feet.

There is not a good correlation between shoe size and height. There will be exceptions to the rule, but this is true for many people that taller people tend to have bigger feet.

What if I’m in Between Shoe Sizes?

If you find yourself between shoe sizes, choose the bigger one. Your toes need room to be able to move freely. If shoes are too tight, they can pinch certain areas of your foot, which is not only uncomfortable but can lead to serious problems.

Once you are wearing the right size of shoe, your toes should have enough room to wiggle freely. Especially size up for running shoes and hiking boots. If you need a looser fit, go for it! It’s better to have shoes that are a bit too big than ones that are too small.

However, if you own a pair of shoes and they are too big, here you can learn how to make big shoes fit.

Is One Foot Bigger than the Other?

Usually, one foot is bigger than the other. This isn’t a big deal as long as you buy shoes that fit your biggest foot! Don’t buy shoes for your smallest foot and not in different sizes, unless one of your feet is two sizes bigger.

Should Shoes Be Tight or Loose?

Shoes should not be tight or too big. There should be a thumb’s width of space between your toe and the end of the shoe. Your index finger should also be able to fit snugly between your heel and back of the shoe. If you can’t do either, try a different size shoe!

When Should I Try Out Shoes

When you get home from work, take a shower and then try on the running shoes to make sure they fit. If your feet are swollen, they might not fit.

Your feet swell when you run too so try on running shoes at the end of a workday. When you try on running shoes, your feet are swollen already because you were on your feet all day. You will want the shoes to fit comfortably after a long-distance run.

What Size Shoe Should You Buy

The above chart in this article is not a guarantee that your shoes will fit perfectly. It’s always better to try on shoes in person than relying solely on a shoe size conversion chart.

The U.S. Shoe Size System

The shoe size in the U.S. is measured in inches. The standard size is 4-12 in U.S. women’s sizes and 6-16 in U.S men’s sizes, but there are some exceptions to these numbers.

For example, Apis shoes come in larger sizes and they usually fit more generously than women’s shoes which tend to be a little bit narrower for most people who wear them in this country today.

In the U.S., children and youth have a different system of measuring shoe size from adults do, but they also have the same ranges of measurements as adults do too – from 4-12 for girls’ sizes and 6-16 for boys’.

Medical shoes are different from normal shoes. One difference is that they come in more widths, like narrow, medium, wide and extra wide. This may be why American sizing system shoes come in more widths than European sizing system shoes do.

The European Shoe Size System

The European shoe sizing system does not have different sizes for adults and children. The range is small-large, where small is for children and large is for men. But there’s one difference between the U.S. and the European shoe sizing systems: in Europe, this system is also pretty much unisex!

For example, there is not much difference in how the shoe fits when you wear a size 42 and you’re a woman. You might think it’s a men’s or women’s shoe, but only the design tells that it is one or the other.
