Measuring Feet: EU & U.S. Sizes

brannock shoe size measuring device
Brannock shoe size measuring device

To measure your feet correctly for shoes in EU or U.S. sizes, follow these simplified steps:

Without a Brannock Device:

  • Place a piece of paper on a hard surface.
  • Draw lines from your heel to toe and from your big toe to your little toe.
  • Cut out the drawing and stand on it, ensuring your heel aligns with the drawn line.
  • Use a measuring tape or ruler in centimeters to measure the length and width of your foot on the paper.

Measuring Foot Width:

For accurate width, measure your feet while standing as your feet spread out.
Measure the circumference of your feet in centimeters.

Alternative Method:

Measure both feet and add one centimeter to each measurement, then divide by two to find your shoe size. This method is less accurate but can be done alone at home.

Tips:

  • Measure your feet later in the day when they are likely to be at their largest due to swelling.
  • Avoid buying shoes that are too small, hoping they will stretch. Choose shoes that are comfortable from the start.
  • For understanding shoe width, refer to a shoe width chart.

This approach allows you to measure your feet at home and helps in selecting the correct shoe size, ensuring comfort and avoiding discomfort from ill-fitting shoes.

Do Shoe Sizes Go by Inches

No, the shoe sizes are not measured only by inches, actually, you get more accurate measurements with centimeters. We have added both centimeters and inches for above chart.

Brand Variations in Shoe Size

Sometimes shoe sizes can seem to vary by a half size depending on the brand. It is best to try on shoes before buying them so you know what size they are.

But if not, you can find out the conversion between brands online and it is worth looking into the retailer’s own conversion chart as well.

Men’s vs. Women’s Sizes

Men’s shoe sizes are approximately two sizes bigger

The U.S. Shoe Size System

The U.S. shoe size system measures in inches, with standard sizes ranging from 4-12 for women and 6-16 for men, though there are exceptions like Apis shoes which offer larger sizes. Women’s shoes in the U.S. are typically narrower. Children and youth sizes mirror adult ranges but are categorized differently. Unlike standard shoes, medical shoes offer a variety of widths including narrow, medium, wide, and extra wide, providing more options than those typically found in the European sizing system.

The European Shoe Size System

The European shoe size system is unified for adults and children, ranging from small (children) to large (men), and is essentially unisex. Unlike the U.S. system, the main difference between men’s and women’s shoes in Europe is the design, not the size, making a size 42 shoe fit similarly for both genders.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does Shoe Size Determine Height?

The size of shoes is not a definite sign of how tall someone will be. There can be tall people with smaller feet and shorter people with big feet.

There is not a good correlation between shoe size and height. There will be exceptions to the rule, but this is true for many people that taller people tend to have bigger feet.

2. What if I’m in Between Shoe Sizes?

If you’re between shoe sizes, it’s advisable to opt for the larger size to ensure your toes have enough space to move freely. Tight shoes can cause discomfort and lead to foot problems. This is particularly important for running shoes and hiking boots, where a slightly looser fit can prevent issues. If you end up with shoes that are too big, there are ways to make them fit better.

3. Is One Foot Bigger than the Other?

Usually, one foot is bigger than the other. This isn’t a big deal as long as you buy shoes that fit your biggest foot! Don’t buy shoes for your smallest foot and not in different sizes, unless one of your feet is two sizes bigger.

4. Should Shoes Be Tight or Loose?

Shoes should not be tight or too big. There should be a thumb’s width of space between your toe and the end of the shoe. Your index finger should also be able to fit snugly between your heel and back of the shoe. If you can’t do either, try a different size shoe!

5. When Should I Try Out Shoes?

When you get home from work, take a shower and then try on the running shoes to make sure they fit. If your feet are swollen, they might not fit.

Your feet swell when you run too so try on running shoes at the end of a workday. When you try on running shoes, your feet are swollen already because you were on your feet all day. You will want the shoes to fit comfortably after a long-distance run.

6. What Size Shoe Should You Buy?

The above chart in this article is not a guarantee that your shoes will fit perfectly. It’s always better to try on shoes in person than relying solely on a shoe size conversion chart.
